TOUR: Meet the Artist: Emma van Noort

Guided tour with Emma van Noort through the Kiefhoek

Chabot Museum and UrbanGuides present ‘Christine’s Choreography’ by Emma van Noort in museum house De Kiefhoek. Let yourself be carried away by a modernist working-class house from 1929 under the direction of the artist herself, who compares the progressive living principles of the time with how we now view living, domesticity and the household.

During the Rotterdam Architecture Month, Emma van Noort resides in the museum house. She is inspired by the impact of standardized principles on the modern home. She takes a closer look at these principles by making installations at unique locations and exchanging ideas with visitors about these living principles. For example, she recently made a publication about Piet Zwart’s iconic kitchen from 1938 for the Bruynzeel company. A kitchen that is still produced to this day. In the museum house she takes a critical look at the creed ‘form follows function’ of Functionalists such as J.J.P. Old and she tests whether the motives of this movement are still functional.

The tour takes place in De Kiefhoek by J.J.P Oud. This residential area is the undisputed highlight of modernism in social housing in Rotterdam. In the late 1920s, Oud built these hypermodern terraced houses with identical facades and interiors, uniform to exude a sense of community.
